Whether you’re crafting a hygiene kit for yourself, a loved one, or as a volunteer, there are a few essential items we recommend including. Homelessness is unpredictable and does not discriminate based on age, gender, or political affiliation. Keeping up with daily routines is a great way to boost your mental health. These hygiene kits are small and portable. You’ll be able to transport them easily and keep them with you wherever you are. We’ll also discuss options for obtaining prepared hygiene kits from places in your community if you’re unable to assemble your own.

In your kit, you’ll want to include the essentials, of course, like a toothbrush, floss, toothpaste, deodorant, shampoo, bar soap, and a hairbrush. These can be picked up for an affordable price at your local Dollar Tree, Dollar General, or any other discount store. Waterless soap is also a great addition to your kit if running water or bottled water isn’t handy. Many waterless soaps are marketed toward camping, so you may need to pick it up at a store that sells recreational outdoor equipment. If you’re preparing a kit for loved ones or your community, online suppliers offer a variety of waterless soaps. Waterless versions of toothpaste and mouthwash can also be a great addition to your kit. These come in convenient, chewable tabs that are lightweight and compact.

Additional items to include in your kit are a washcloth, nail clippers, and wet wipes. Detergent sheets can also be included. Detergent sheets are lightweight, portable, and pre-portioned. With detergent sheets, you won’t have to worry about spills or leaks. Remember to include menstrual products, razors, or band-aids in your kit, depending on your needs. Free menstrual products are provided at select Planned Parenthood locations, food banks, diaper banks, and shelters. If you have access to a phone or the internet, texting 211 or going to 211.org can show you where free menstrual products can be picked up in your area.

If you are unable to assemble your kit, there may be locations in your area that offer pre-assembled kits and assistance. If you are staying in a shelter, you can use the shelter’s address to obtain a library card. You may want to ask a shelter staff member to help you with this, as some libraries may require a photo ID. Library cards are usually free and will allow you to access the internet and a printer if needed. Try searching for organizations and churches in your area that provide hygiene kits and additional resources. If you are not staying in a shelter, members of local churches may be able to assist you.

We hope that this article will help you and your loved ones. Whether you are making these kits for yourself, a loved one, or your community, these simple items can make a world of difference. You can even stash a few kits in your car or place of work and hand them out to those in need. Keeping up with one’s hygiene is a boon to one's mental and physical health. Everyone deserves to feel their best, no matter their current circumstances.
